Book of the Month:
11 Experiments That Failed written by Jenny Offill, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter

This book is an example of inquiry at its best!
Is it possible to eat snowballs doused in ketchup—and nothing else—all winter? Can a washing machine wash dishes? By reading the step-by-step instructions, kids can discover the answers to such all-important questions along with the book's curious narrator. Here are 12 "hypotheses," as well as lists of "what you need," "what to do," and "what happened" that are sure to make young readers laugh out loud as they learn how to conduct science experiments (really!).

Our online bookstore offers:

  • Quality curriculum-related picture books and resources
  • Professional evaluation of featured titles, including teaching ideas and recommendations
  • Database searchable by curriculum area, subject, theme, character traits, IB learner profile traits and writing traits.
  • A collection that will travel to your school library in Southern Ontario

Picture books can provide excellent examples of the six traits of good writing. It is now possible to search for such books, by writing trait, by choosing the trait that you want to focus on. Although each picture storybook would contain elements of these writing traits, we’ve chosen the trait most clearly depicted in the text as examples. This is a new initiative for us so please feel free to add and/or suggest any other picture books that are exemplary of these traits.

Search our database by the six writing traits by clicking on the desired trait:
Idea Development, Organization, Voice, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice and Conventions.
